Hi there

A digital game-changer 🌏

We’re excited to share how the Sunshine Coast is cementing its place as a globally connected digital hub, especially in light of the recent Google announcement.

In case you missed it, here’s the big news: Google has joined forces with Sunshine Coast Council and NEXTDC to deliver a second submarine broadband cable to the Sunshine Coast. This state-of-the-art infrastructure will land at NEXTDC’s SC1 data centre in Maroochydore by 2025, further enhancing the region’s role in global connectivity.

What this means for businesses and investors

  • Strategic connections: The new 'Tabua' trans-Pacific' submarine cable will directly link the US, Australia and Fiji: creating faster, more reliable internet infrastructure for emerging Indo-Pacific markets.
  • A competitive edge: The Sunshine Coast already offers unparalleled connectivity, with the fastest international connection to Asia from Australia’s east coast. The second cable will take the coast to the next level as one of Australia's most globally connected regions.
  • Innovation-driven growth: The cable supports Maroochydore City Centre’s growth as a key investment destination, equipped with premium infrastructure, proximity to major airports and a highly skilled workforce.

This initiative complements a series of existing projects designed to establish the Sunshine Coast as a leading destination for tech-driven investment. By connecting to key markets in Southeast Asia, Australia and the US, this project offers significant opportunities for businesses looking to expand their reach.

Looking ahead

The Google initiative is more than a broadband cable, it’s a step forward for digital infrastructure in the Indo-Pacific. A complementary land-based cable will connect the Sunshine Coast to Darwin, forming a critical transit route to Southeast Asia.

Together, this project will drive economic growth and reinforce the Sunshine Coast’s role as a hub for global technology and innovation.
