"The Sunshine Coast has experienced a coming of age in the past decade. The combination of a quality workforce and an awesome lifestyle is hard to beat."

Oli Steele

CEO, SUNSHINE COAST UNIVERSITY PRIVATE HOSPITAL

For hospital CEO Oli Steele, a major indicator of the Sunshine Coast’s maturity as a region has been the construction of an international-standard health precinct, including two new hospitals.

Oli Steele has spent three years as CEO of the new Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital (SCUPH), watching in real time as one of Australia’s largest health precinct grows around him.

The SCUPH was the pioneering facility when it opened three years ago on a 17-hectare greenfield site on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

Immediate neighbours include the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, opening early 2017, and the Oceanside Health Hub, with its purpose-built medical and specialist rooms.

“In the first two and a half years of operation, SCUPH treated 50,000 patients,” says Oli. “Many of these might have otherwise had to travel to Brisbane for treatment.

“The hospital is supporting and recruiting doctors in a range of specialties so that patients can stay on the Coast for their specialist care.

“We’re finding specialist doctors are attracted to working here, obviously because of the idyllic lifestyle, but also because of the state-of-the-art facilities and the growing size of the health precinct.”

The hospital is continually expanding its specialist offerings, from orthopaedics, cardiology and neurosurgery to urology and bariatric surgery, as well as medical therapies such as oncology and renal dialysis.

The hospital has also just won accolades including as follows.

  • Innovation Award for its Sterilising department paperless system.
